Feeding the Hummingbirds

Right now the Hummingbirds are starting to migrate and move to the BC coast.  We saw three hummingbirds in different locations around Victoria and I believe that they where Anna’s Hummingbird’s. A friend told me that they actually live in Victoria year round because of the mild tempertures which was verified here.  I only managed to get a photo of one, and it is just a silhoette, but you could see as it turned it’s head it would shimmer an orange/red colour. The rest of it was greyish/green.  Here is a good website that talks all about Hummingbirds.  Their page “Hummingbird Garden Catalog” has the names of many different flowers that will attract Hummingbirds to your garden.  In our garden we have many hummingbird friendly palnts including; Cosmos, Dahlia‘s, Foxglove, Gladiolus, Honeysuckle, Hydrangea, Iris‘s, Jasmine and Snapdragon’s.

Annika and I decided to make up some nectar for our hummingbird feeder so our kids can watch out for them as they pass through the Comox Valley.  Here is the recipe we used.  Hopefully we will be able to see many this year as hummingbirds were always among my favourites growing up and I know our kids will have fun watching them.
